What is the Business Investor Visa?

The Business Investor Visa allows experienced businesspeople to purchase and operate a qualifying New Zealand business.


It replaces previous investor and entrepreneur categories, combining investment capital requirements with hands-on business operation expectations.

Applicants invest in an established, lawful, and compliant New Zealand business that:

  • Has operated for at least five years;
  • Employs five or more full-time staff; and
  • Demonstrates commercial viability and solvency.

Length of Stay:

Up to 4 years (Work Visa Stage), split into:

  • 12 months Establishment Stage – to transfer investment funds, complete the business purchase, and start operations.
  • Up to 3 years Operating Stage – to continue managing and growing the business.

After successfully meeting all requirements, applicants can transition to the Business Investor Residence Visa.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify, you must:

  • Be aged 55 or under.
  • Have at least three years of acceptable business or senior management experience.
  • Have unencumbered investment capital sufficient to purchase at least 25% of a business valued at NZ$1 million or more, plus NZ$500,000 in reserve funds.
  • Be able to prove the lawful source and transferability of your investment capital.
  • Meet health, character, English-language, and fit and proper person standards.
  • Intend to be actively involved in managing the business.
  • Ensure the business will create at least one new full-time job for a New Zealand citizen or resident.

Pathway to Residency:

Two distinct residence options are available under the Business Investor Visa:

Conditions for the 12-month (NZ$2 million) residence option:

  • Transfer and use the full NZ$2 million in the business.
  • Continue to operate the same business, remaining actively involved for three years total.
  • Maintain five full-time employees and one new full-time NZ citizen/resident position.
  • Maintain business solvency and spend at least 184 days in NZ each year.

Failure to maintain these conditions may result in loss of residence status under section 49(1) of the Immigration Act 2009.

Visa Approval in Principle

Once approved, transfer investment funds to New Zealand within 9 months.

Step 5:

Business Purchase and Operation

Complete the business purchase and begin active management within 12 months.

Step 6:

Ongoing Monitoring

Maintain business performance, job creation, and full compliance with New Zealand laws.

Step 7:

Residence Application

Apply for residence after 3 years (NZ$1m) or 12 months (NZ$2m).

Step 8:

Residence Granted

Receive your residence visa and continue operating the business for at least 3 years total.
